On Friday, May 23, 2025, I explored Rolin T. Grant Gulf Wilderness Park in Lockport, drawn by my recent interest in waterfalls. My main destination was Indian Falls on the West Branch of 18 Mile Creek in Niagara County.
This park is a somewhat hidden treasure northwest of Lockport. While very scenic, its four color-coded trails aren't well maintained. Given the exceptionally wet spring, they were also quite slippery. Unfortunately, 18 Mile Creek has a history of significant pollution due to local heavy industry.
From a geological perspective, the park was quite intriguing. I observed a mix of fluvial (river-formed), glacial, and fluvial-glacial surficial deposits throughout the area. Many human-made stone walls in the park were constructed using rocks sourced locally and transported for building. The predominant rock type appeared to be Grimsby Sandstone, which forms the main structure of Indian Falls itself.
A strange banded rock found in the uplands from 18 Mile Creek.
