Umpire Rock, located in Central Park's southwest corner near 63rd Street, is a massive 460-million-year-old exposure of Manhattan schist. It features prominent glacial striations and polished surfaces from the last ice age (approx. 30,000 years ago). This metamorphic rock was created during the Taconic Orogeny when volcanic islands collided with North America.
